Never heard of Odd Future? Well I’m sure that will all soon change. These collection of teens from Cali are defining there own brand of music with mellow-rowdy beats and deep dark lyrics.
Their subjects in which they choose to delve into are without a doubt not your typical fonder of rap music. They cover rape, drug use, descriptive murder plots, as well as an opposition to conventional religion with multiple references to the devil all adorned with ski masks marked with upside down crosses on them. Reviews of their music have labeled it as “demonic”, my first introduction to them was watching Jimmy Fallon one night and seeing them perform “Sandwhiches” my first impression were that these guys are too dark for my liking and didn’t quite understand nor wanted to subject myself to what I felt they represented at the time. However, weeks past and on the radio in NY I hear a song by the name of “Novacane” and instantly thought it was a hit and was surprised to find out it was a song by Frank Ocean a rapper/singer and member of the group Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All or OFWGKTA for short. So it began, thanks to the power of YouTube I listened to everything Frank Ocean and songs off his LP “Nostalgia” a alternative R&B effort that opened my eyes to the undeniable talent there so I preceded to listen to music of the rest of the group, that dark semi cynical music and found that the music is actually quite GENIUS. Front man Tyler The Creator’s LP “Goblin” is a collection of raw unadulterated dark lyrics done in such a lyrically pleasing way that you ignore the content and just respect the creativity. Sure what he is saying is off kilt and strange but so is all music from rappers who only talk bout toting guns, murdering people, spending money, and sexing women. It’s all entertainment so be entertained, don’t try and stiffen someone’s freedom of speech. This was classic, “never judge a book by its cover” this group has garnered attention from several major labels and to watch video of their live shows it’s evident that they have such a strong collection of fans (myself included) that will only continue to grow. But don’t take my word for it listen and decide for yourself. I posted a few videos below in one you’ll see Tyler eat a cockroach, throw up, then hang himself in the end . call me crazy, but thats not controversial its CREATIVE.
